The Difference Between Knowing the Material and Passing the Test

"I know this material inside and out. Why doesn't my test score show that?"

If you have ever thought this, you are not alone - and you are not the problem.

The answer is simple. A test usually tests how well you take a test. It does not always test how well you know the material.

You can understand the concepts. You can solve the problems. Sometimes you can even picture the book or webpage where you learned the material. And still the score doesn't reflect what you know.

That's because test taking is a skill. Just like some people are naturally good at learning languages, or can name a song within the first two notes, some people are naturally good test takers. But here's what matters: skills can be learned.

The problem is that most of us were never taught how to take a test. We just took them. And when we didn't perform as expected, we started to believe "I am just bad at taking tests." I can't tell you how many times I have heard this, and it breaks my heart every time. When a student says it to me, I hand them a post-it note, make them write it down, and then put it through my post-it note shredder. That belief does not get to stay.

So how do you actually improve your test-taking?

Learn test-taking strategies.

The single most effective strategy is to read every question slowly, carefully, and with intention. It is so easy to start reading a question, think "Oh, I know what this is asking!" and race to answer it - only to miss a key word that changes everything.

Also, don't expect yourself to stay completely focused for the entire exam. Give yourself mini-mental breaks between problems. Stretch your arms, wiggle your toes, take a breath. It sounds small, but it pulls you out of your head just long enough to reset your focus.

Work on your mindset.

It is possible to fail a test before you even sit down to take it. Thinking you are going to fail can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Will thinking "I will pass" guarantee it? No. But thinking "I will fail" guarantees one thing: it will not help you.

Mental performance is something I'm deeply passionate about; it's why I pursued my certification in Mental Performance Mastery. It is the ability to manage your attention and energy under pressure. Improving it will help reduce test-day anxiety, build confidence, and allow you to bounce back quickly when you hit a hard question.

Here are two tools you can start using today.

Feel the temperature of your breath. I know it sounds strange, but stick with me. Take a deep breath in through your nose and notice the cool feel of the air. Now exhale through your nose. Feel how much warmer it is on the way out? Take 2-3 breaths focused on that temperature shift and you will feel yourself snap back into the present moment. It works every time.

Catch a Win. What is one thing you did well today? Our brains are wired to replay mistakes. We have to actively retrain them to register success. Instead of replaying the tests that didn't go well, recall the ones that did. Your brain needs evidence of success to build confidence so give it some!
